DIY Ice Bucket and Coasters
We're having a heat wave in Southern California this Labor Day weekend, so it's the perfect time to whip up these coasters and an ice bucket. These cute coasters can be personalized with the initial of each guest for them to take home with them, or you can put your family initial on all of them to create a set.
Supplies for one coaster:
- ScanNCutDX machine and accessories
- 4” round mini cake pan
- 5” x 4.5” adhesive backed cork
- 5” x 4.5” black heat applied vinyl
- 3” x 3” white heat applied vinyl
- Twine
- Iron and ironing board
- Pressing cloth
- Hot glue gun and glue (optional)
- Washi tape (optional)
Supplies for one Ice bucket:
- ScanNCutDX machine and accessories
- Galvanized metal bucket
- White craft vinyl (as large & wide as the front of the bucket)
- Black craft vinyl (the same width as the white, but half the height)
- Grid transfer sheet (as large as the white craft vinyl)
- FREE CUT FILE: https://www.erinbassett.com/Freebies/Cut_Files/Ice%20Cold%20Beverages.fcm
Coaster Instructions:
- Adhere the cork onto the standard craft mat face down. If needed, use washi tape along the edges to ensure it stays stuck on the mat. Insert the mat into the machine.
- Press “patterns,” then press the shapes icon.
Scroll through the shapes to find a circle and press it.
Adjust the size to fit inside the bottom of the mini pan. Then adjust the quantity to cut to the number of mini cake pan coasters you’re going to make. Press “set.”
Select “cut” then press “ok,” then select “cut” and “start.”
After it’s finished cutting, unload the mat and remove all the cork pieces from the mat.
- Adhere the black heat applied vinyl to the mat with the backing side adhered to the mat and load it into the machine.
Press the home button and “ok.”
Then press “patterns,” then scroll down to the icon with a teacup and letter A and press it.
Next, click on the teacup and scroll down to find the correct pattern: ST-B012.
Resize the pattern to fit on your cork coaster. Then adjust the quantity and then press “set.”
Next, select “cut” and then click on the wrench icon.
Scroll down to “half cut” and turn it “on.” This will allow you to cut through only the vinyl and not the backing. Press “ok” to return to the previous screen.
Perform a test cut if you’re new to cutting this type of vinyl on your machine.
Press “start” to begin cutting.
After it’s finished cutting, unload the mat and remove all the pieces from the mat.
- Adhere the white heat applied vinyl to the mat with the backing side adhered to the mat and load it into the machine.
Press the home button and “ok.” Then press “patterns,” then “letters”
Select the font you want to use and then type your initial and press “ok.”
Press “Object Edit,” then resize the pattern to fit inside the black design.

Press “Object Edit” and then the “flip” icon so they will be cut in reverse.
Press “ok,” then select “cut” and “start.”
After it’s finished cutting, unload the mat and remove all the pieces from the mat.
5. Carefully weed out the negative spaces of the designs in the heat applied vinyl by separating it from the backing and gently pulling it off.
- At your ironing board, center the black design onto the cork circle with the vinyl side down. Cover it with a pressing cloth, iron it according to the manufacturer instructions, and then allow it to cool before slowly removing the backing.
Center the white initial onto the center of the cork circle with the vinyl side down and follow the same instructions to adhere it onto the coaster.
- Peel off the backing on the cork and adhere it to the inside bottom of the mini pan.
- Wrap twine around the outside of the pan, tying it in place. Use hot glue to anchor it, if needed.
Ice Bucket Instructions:
- Download the cut file (https://www.erinbassett.com/Freebies/Cut_Files/Ice%20Cold%20Beverages.fcm) and load it onto your ScanNCutDX by choosing “retrieve data,” and then choosing the source containing the cut file.
- Adhere the white vinyl to the top of the mat and the black vinyl below it and insert the mat into the machine.
Drag the cut file piece onto the correct piece of vinyl then press “ok.”
4. Select “cut,” and ensure it says that the “half-cut” is on so that it will cut only through the vinyl and not the backing.
Perform a test cut if you’re unfamiliar with cutting this type of vinyl on your machine.
When you’re ready to cut press “start.”
When the cutting is complete, press unload and remove all the pieces from the cutting mat.
- Carefully weed out the negative spaces of the designs by separating it from the backing and gently pulling it off.
- Remove the backing from the grid transfer sheet and then place the sheet on top of the vinyl pattern.
Use your spatula to burnish the transfer sheet onto the vinyl.
Carefully peel back the transfer sheet taking the vinyl with it.
Center the design onto the front of the ice bucket. Burnish the transfer sheet to cause the vinyl to stick to the bucket then gently peel back the transfer sheet leaving the vinyl design on the bucket.
Repeat for the black vinyl design.
