Knitting Feed

Yes, it's a heatwave and I'm knitting.

Erin Bassett - Knook Knitting
I know it's crazy, but as much as I hate to admit it...the holidays are coming up!  I really can't believe how quick this year has flown by!!

Now, any of you familiar with knitting and crocheting may look at these photos and think "um, I thought she said she was knitting, I see a crochet hook"...well, you'd be right, kind of. You see, I'm using a Knook.

Knook Beginner Set

When I first saw the Knook I thought it seemed like a great idea, but I was wondering if it would actually work well and if I'd actually figure out how to use it.

Now, since I do more crocheting then knitting I did have to turn a switch on in my brain so I could remember to knit with it instead of what the muscle memory in my hands wanted to do...crochet.  But the videos that are mentioned in the instruction booklet were very clear on how to do it and I picked it up really quickly.  Here's my first swatch doing a garter stitch...

And here's the scarf I'm currently making along with the Knook in action. The red cord (it comes with three different colors) acts as one of your knitting needles, but is (obviously) flexible compared with traditional knitting needles so it is easy to work with.

So, a couple of TV shows later this is what I have...it's a good start.  Hopefully I don't get distracted and it will get finished by Christmas time!!  I'd love to make myself a hat next...or maybe a blanket.

Catching up reading my crafty books!

Time seems to go by faster & faster these days!  I've been slowing down my to-do list so that I can enjoy more of each day and it's been fantastic.  I'm really looking forward to a meaningful, consciously enjoyed summer!!

With that in mind, I haven't been watching much TV, which has been great.  I got in a bad TV habit after my surgery and I'm loving the extra time I have when I'm not hooked on it! For me, even when it's on in the background and I'm multitasking with something else I'm not as productive...which has lead to me reading more at night...which has lead to me sleeping SO well (most of the time)!

Reading

So what have I been reading?

image from www.sixthandspringbooks.comI've been trying to go through my new knitting books and get ideas and good projects. Knitting with The Color Guys: Inspiration, Ideas, and Projects from the Kaffe Fassett Studio is visually stunning!  Especially if you're like me & love cheery colors and interesting patterns. Each chapter is organized by color inspiration such as: soft tones, singing colors (vibrant colors & graphic patterned designs), moody hues, and rich shades.  Here's a peek inside:

image from www.sixthandspringbooks.comIf you've read my previous post about knitting books you've seen how much I like the Vogue Knitting Stitchionary series. Right now I'm reading through Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Volume One: Knit & Purl: The Ultimate Stitch Dictionary.  This series is THE best resource for knitting!  Just this one book contains more then 250 stitch patterns (and great swatch photos of each one) and they are arranged by order of difficulty, which is really handy!! There's also a bunch of patterns in this book and the instructions are really great.  You can check out more info about this book on Amazon.

image from www.sixthandspringbooks.comIs it wrong to love a book just for its cover?  LOL, I love the cover of Knitting Never Felt Better: The Definitive Guide to Fabulous Felting ...but I also love the actual book too!  I love that it starts with a warning that "felting is addictive. Those of you who have felted before know what I mean. Those of you who have not should be prepared to embark on a wondrous new knitting experience that may change you from a docile, contented, traditional knitter into ...a wildly creative felting freak! So don't say I didn't warn you."  :)

The author gives great instructions for the basics of felting and shows how different yarns react to the felting process (with before & after swatch photos), she also shows many unique three dimensional projects which literally made my jaw drop.  Here's just a peek:

I'm also reading some fiction...I just finished Hand Me Down by Melanie Thorne on the Kindle App (I read most books on my Samson Galaxy Tablet).  Great book, but it was very "real" and graphic book about a dysfunctional family.  It made me think about the kids that I used to work with since so many of them had tragic family situations.  Broke my heart a bit.  I did love that relationship that developed between the Aunt and one of the children.  As a Auntie I hope that my nieces and nephew know they can always come to me with anything and will receive non-judgemental love and help.

Anyways, I'm on Goodreads if you're interested in seeing what else I've read or plan on reading in the future.  Also, if you have a great book you've read lately, crafty or fiction, please let me know!!
